When do you switch contracts for Futures Expirations ? 2012 and 2013

or When do Futures Contracts Rollover?

Seems traders aren’t sure when to switch contracts for Futures since its a bit different from Stock Expirations

A few important things to keep in mind :

Unlike Stocks Expirations, Futures Expirations are 3rd Friday but of each Quarter not month ( so each March , June, September and December is Rollover).

The Rollover ( Switching Contracts) is 8 days before Expiration so previous Thursday of 3rd Friday.

The Contracts and letters are : March=H June=M September=U December=Z

For example today is Friday June 8th and some of us already switched over yesterday Thurs. June 7th from June to September contracts – volume was still mixed Thursday but into next week you’ll see most of volume switching over to the new contracts.

Here is how the Eminis Rolled over ( ESM2 switches to ESU2) ,  Russell (TFM2 switches to TFU2 ).

Some brokers automatically switch it for you so you don’t have to worry about it.

Another thing when you see ES_F or TF_F it just means the current Emini or Russell Futures contract instead of typing ESM2, ESU2 etc.

What does the number 2 mean in ESM2 ?  the 2 means 2012 sometimes could even be typed as ESM12

Emini and Russell Futures Rollover Dates for Remaining of 2012:

June 7th switch from ESM2 to ESU2  and TFM2 to TFU2 ( June to September Rollover)

Sept 13th switch from ESU2 to ESZ2 and TFU2 to TFZ2  ( September to December Rollover)

December 13th switch from ESZU2 to ESH3 and TFZ2 to TFH3 ( December 2012 to March 2013 Rollover )

Futures Contracts for remaining of 2012

ESM2  TFM2 June

ESU2  TFU2  September

ESZ2  TFZ2  December

Futures Contracts for 2013

ESH3 TFH3 March

ESM3 TFM3  June

ESU3 TFU3  September

ESZ3  TFZ3  December

Small test for you to see if you get this:

So what would ESZ3 stand for?  ES is Emini, Z is December, 3 is 2013

So ESZ3 woudl be Emini December Contracts for 2013

Don’t worry if you find this a bit confusing  but hopefully you get the idea now and you found this helpful

sometimes you also see them typed as ES_F or TF_F or :

ESM12 TFM12  ESU12  TFU12 ESZ12 TFZ12 ESH13 TFH13 ESM13 TFM13 ESU13  TFU13  ESZ13   TF Z13
