update April 16th, 2013 : I think after the attack at Boston Marathon:
Blog i did here with pics/videos from Boston Marathon explosions
Civilian Drone Stocks will be a topic of conversation in the coming weeks/months as police departments will look at drones as another way to police events, crime scenes , criminal activity, accidents etc.
I know the Privacy issues will be a hot topic for many but we’ve seen this has taken a back seat when security is at stake. You will get a lot of emotions but the government seems to have already laid the groundwork for Civilian Drones in US Skies and I’ve outlined below some of the stocks I have been looking at : This blog below is from March when I first started looking at stocks in this sector.  Hope you find it helpful
===============================================================================
March 13, 2013 Blog on Drone Stocks
Over the next 10 years the US Drone Economy is set to explode and is expected to  add 100,000 jobs and  $13.7B to economy - http://sg22.ly/14WUM7X
A bill passed last month allocates  $63 billion to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and would allow up to 30,000 drones in civilian airspace across the US over the next 10 years.  According to the FAA the Worldwide DRONE market is expected to be worth over $90B  in the next 10 years
The coming drone explosion could mean the end of privacy in public as we know it. Privacy will be a huge  issue and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) commented:

Unfortunately, nothing in the bill would address the very serious privacy issues raised by drone aircraft. This bill would push the nation willy-nilly toward an era of aerial surveillance without any steps to protect the traditional privacy that Americans have always enjoyed and expected

The US population is now accustomed to helicopters used by police regularly for police chases etc. but DRONES will put us in a new world of surveillance.

Stocks Set to benefit from this explosive US Drone market are:

What are the best US Drone Stocks to buy?

1) AeroVironment (Nasdaq:AVAV)

AeroVironment’s primary focus lies with a surveillance drone called the Qube, which weighs about five pounds, costs about $50,000 and is designed to help assess dangerous situations. These will assist police departments in capturing video surveillance of scenes involving accidents and criminal activity, allowing them to collect further evidence and gather documentation. These should be great for police forces, SWAT teams, Fire Departments etc.
It offers small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which provide ISR and communications, including real-time tactical reconnaissance, tracking, combat assessment, and geographic data to the small tactical unit or individual war fighter.

AVAV – US Drones – Stockguy22

AVAV has also sold to over 20 countries so should benefit from expansion outside of the US. Even Canada’s RCMP recently bought AVAV’s Qube with a $250K+ contract for 3 Drones.
We will probably see many US police forces buy drones in the next few years. This sort of reminds me of when I traded TASR ( Taser) ahead of all the many Police contracts that were issued.
With the recent drop on AVAV may be a good time to position longer term into this $19 area. Could drop back towards $18 but there were many buyers that bought the gap down the day it fell apart. Check my past blog on AVAV here:

 2) Northrop Grumman Corp. ( NYSE:NOC)

In sea, land, air and space, Northrop Grumman is the recognized leader in unmanned systems. It makes the Bat Unmanned Aircraft System ( BAT UAS) , Euro Hawk, Fire Scout, Firebird, Global Hawk  . Mostly military but has some Swat contracts for  ANDROS F6A with Window Breaker and Dual PAN Disrupter mount and ANDROS F6A on toes with SL6 shotgun and mount. This could give them a lead in with SWAT teams in the US looking for Drones.

This stock also plays a 3.3% dividend and read that they recently won a $50Mill Contract for Electronic Warfare.

3) Lockheed Martin ( NYSE:LMT)

They’ve been on a DRONE buying spree:

in December 2012 San Luis Obispo manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles—known as drones—has been purchased by a major military contractor, Lockheed Martin, for an undisclosed amount.  The SLO manufacturer produced the Fury UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), used to conduct intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare missions for the U.S. Armed Forces.

in December 2012 announced the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of CDL Systems Ltd., a software engineering firm that specializes in the development and licensing of vehicle control station software for unmanned systems

in November 2012  announced the acquisition of Chandler/May, Inc., a company that specializes in the design, development, integration, manufacturing, and support of fully integrated mission critical systems for  unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (C4ISR) missions. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

LMT  I recently highlighted in last week’s newsletter as one of 5 defense companies I liked. One of the big advantages too is the 5.10% dividend that LMT pays as well as the recent drop in January/February.

4) TEXTRON ( NYSE:TXT)

this stock has recently broken out over $30 level. Its the maker of the CESSNA planes which makes up over 26% of their sales in 2011

The have the Shadow , Aerosonde and Orbiter Drones. Hopefully they don’t use this new drone  in your US neighbourhood and they keep it for just military use for now but ..

Textron Defense Systems has a new flying drone that’s designed to explode on contact with enemy positions. The compact BattleHawk Squad Level Loitering Munition is armed with a 40mm high-fragmentation charge. It has a video camera built into its nose, so ground troops can remotely pilot it over rooftops or hills to attack hiding enemy forces.

not much of a dividend for this stock as its only .30% ( .08cents )

5) Boeing ( NYSE: BA)

Although mostly known for planes, a recent drone that they tested is one of the most advanced. The computer-blitzing drone that can cripple a nation’s electronics at the touch of a button. During Boeing’s experiment, the missile flew low over the Utah Test and Training Range, discharging  electromagnetic pulses on to seven targets, permanently shutting down their electronics.

BA probably won’t benefit as much as some of the other smaller Drone stocks since
it gets so much income from the design, development, manufacture, sale, and support of commercial jetliners, military aircraft, satellites, missile defense, human space flight, and launch systems and services worldwide.

Boeing also has a nice 2.4% dividend and yesterday got approved by the FAA to test the redesigned battery which grounded the 787 planes since February.

6) BAE Systems ( OTC/pink:BAESY)

small OTC /Pink sheet Drone Stock that recently had a runup to over $22 from just over $20 dip. Volume is very light but could watch this one for a dip or a break out over $23. This is not my type of trader since its OTC /Pink and its light volume approx 25k shares per day does not make it appealing to me.

Their concept aircraft is called Taranis. The aim of the Taranis is to see if an autonomous and stealthy unmanned aircraft capable of striking targets with real precision at long range, even in another continent, is even possible.

Also  BAE Systems has a flapless Demon UAV and is one of the unmanned technologies currently under development

7) Raytheon ( NYSE:RTN)

nice move over $57 on this recently after having a drop in January near $52

Raytheon has built the Killer Bee Drones but also makes the bombs used in drone attacks.

Raytheon is one of the suppliers of the laser-guided “Paveway” 500-lb. bombs used in U.S. drone attacks. Last year 2012 Raytheon developed The bomb, called Pyros, which was dropped from a drone flying at 7,000 feet and hit the designated bull’s-eye on a target that lay below.

Raytheon also pays a nice dividend of 3.6%
DRONES are already in US skies mostly used by the military for testing and training.
